Friar's Cowl, Arisarum vulgare

The Friar's Cowl is a widespread low growing perennial and is found in light shade, particularly in rocky places. It is not often noticed due to its small size and its liking for secluded places. This specimen was found in the Utrera Gorge near the old mine workings. The leaves and tuber of the plant have been used as a medicine and edible herb in Spain but they contain the chemical calcium oxylate which is a poison, only being removed when the plants are cooked. If eaten raw the sensation is like having the tongue and mouth pierced with needles.
