Selwo Marina in The Parque de la Paloma, Benalmádena

This day out is most suitable for those with young children. There is enough to keep them happy for an energetic day. The Marina is in the Parque de la Paloma which is at the top end of the town of Benalmádena, between the N340 and the town centre. To get there drive down the N340 towards Malaga and take junction 222 following the signs for Parque de la Paloma.

All the exhibitions are included in the price. Visitors are not encouraged to take their own food but many do. There is a snack bar and a full restaurant on the site where food is reasonably priced, a set three course meal can be had for 9 Euros and a cheeseburger, chips and drink will cost 6 Euros. A primitive map is supplied but the site is on the side of a hill with everything in sight from any point so getting lost is difficult. The most important information on the map is the timetable of the sea lion, exotic bird and dolphin shows.

For children the highlight will probably be the two large adventure play areas. One conveniently near the snack bar so a peaceful drink is possible. Or maybe the highlight will be the touching area. I know its 'old hat' now but the rays, dogfish and mullet really seem to like the attention.

Penquins can be seen in a large atmosphere controlled area, real snow and ice, with a large glass sided pool so that you can see them swimming. Information is in Spanish and English.

Do not miss the 3D film show. Check the times, Spanish and English shows alternate. I will not spoil the surprise but afterwards the entire audience was baffled as to what relevance the show had, to anything really.

The dolphin show is good fun. They are kept in a holding pool between shows where you can get close enough to have a conversation. I am sure they understand more Spanish or English than we understand dolphin speak. During the show they really give the impression they are enjoying themselves, they are natural show offs.

Similarly the sea lions do their bit in the pool but the main character here is a big old sea lion with whom you can have your photograph taken. He places his head on your shoulder and sticks his tongue out for the camera, the children love it.

One pleasant surprise was the souvenir shop. I normally avoid such places but this one had some very nice, interesting, ornaments and keep sakes.

To finish off the day a walk in the park itself is very pleasant, and free. There is a large pond on which you will see some ornamental species of ducks and geese.
