Bird Watching or Twitching in Andalucia Southern Spain

September 2005 - Bonelli's Eagle - Hieraaetus fasciatus

Bonelli Eagle

Bonelli's Eagle has been nominated as Spain's Bird of the Year for 2005. Spain hosts 750 pairs, 75% of the European population, many of which are in our area. Although 750 pairs sounds a lot the birds are in danger of extinction, most deaths caused by flying into overhead power cables. The best place to see this powerful looking eagle is in the wooded mountainous areas of the Alcornocales National Park north of Jimena and Gaucin where it hunts in pairs for birds and small mammals. In flight it can be recognised by a straight rear edged wing
