ADANA Hits The Road

On 15th March 2009 a small group of dogs from ADANA, the animal rescue centre for Estepona, Casares and Manilva, accompanied by volunteers, will embark on a mammoth sponsored walk which will take them from the gates of their home in Los Pedregales to the steps of the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela. It is a trek of some 1,200 kilometres through some of Spain’s most glorious scenery on an ancient pilgrim route to raise awareness of animal cruelty, to encourage care and compassion towards animals and to raise funds for community based care and educational programmes.

The walk will take 8 weeks and individual walkers are invited to join for a week or more. ADANA will provide special back up vehicles for dogs or walkers who need assistance along the way and to carry luggage and food. Accommodation will vary from campsites to hotels, to pilgrim hostels depending on what is available. A secure camp will be set up for the dogs when accommodation does not permit them to share with their walkers. Bed, breakfast and a packed lunch are provided by ADANA at a cost of 380€ per week.

On the way ADANA will hold press conferences and meetings with local children to highlight the plight of abandoned and mistreated animals. Rotary International in Estepona is supporting ADANA’s efforts not only by having some members participate in the walk, but by helping ADANA to meet local people and to spread the message of care for our animals.

The Walk was launched at an ADANA Masked Ball held on the 21st of June by Project Director Johanna Mayrhofer. Announcing the project Johanna said. “Every great journey begins with a small step”. The Camino Project is the first step towards achieving a world where respect for life replaces cruelty and abuse.

New Moves For ADANA

Since 1989 ADANA has been rescuing, re-homing and caring for abandoned animals in Estepona, Casares and Manilva. The present headquarters in Los Pedregales Park, which belong to the Ayuntamiento of Estepona, are scheduled for a major refit later this year. However much this will improve the conditions for both animals and volunteers, the premises are simply too small for present and future needs.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary next year an important new project has been unveiled. ADANA will start work on Phase One of the new ADANA Sanctuary this summer. The new building will be constructed on a parcel of land which the charity acquired some time ago. Phase One consists of a state of the art headquarters building with a fully-equipped cattery for 60 animals, a veterinary clinic, several isolation units for dogs, store rooms, an office, accommodation for the facility manager and a large meeting room for our education projects.

Phase Two will include kennels and individual runs for up to 100 dogs, a pet cemetery and a pet crematorium. The third phase will involve landscaping of the grounds and the provision of walks and exercise areas for the animals.

To raise funds for the building ADANA has launched The ADANA Sanctuary Tree Appeal. On the front facade of the building we will paint the bare branches of a tree. Supporters will be able to buy ceramic leaves which will be attached to the tree over the coming years. Each leaf can have a dedication that will appear on a display in the foyer of the building. Each leaf is hand made by Aprona in Estepona. A green leaf will cost 25€, a silver leaf 50€ and a gold leaf 100€.

They are available from the ADANA shop in Padre Cura, Longman’s Bookshop in Plaza Manilva, Glitterati Bookshop at Avenida del Carmen 33 in Estepona; the ADANA stall at the Sunday market in Sabinillas and from our web site www.adana-estepona.com. They make the ideal present for the person who has everything or a wonderful way to remember a pet.

Later this summer a ceramic acorn will be planted at the base of the wall of the new building. Please help us make that acorn grow into a mighty oak tree to shelter and support our abandoned animals
